Queens Public Library's Literary Thursdays: Robert Jones, Jr., Author of THE PROPHETS
ONLINE, Thursday, May 15, 2025
Mark your calendars! I will be discussing my debut novel about the forbidden union between two enslaved young men on a Deep South plantation, the refuge they find in each other, and a betrayal that threatens their existence. A New York Times bestselling novel, The Prophets also won the 2022 Publishing Triangle Edmund White Award for Debut Fiction, was a finalist for the 2021 National Book Award for Fiction, and was named one of “The 25 Most Influential Works of Postwar Queer Literature” by The New York Times. Never have I ever encountered a film critic who is able to see through the mirages, pull back the curtains, and reveal what is really going on behind the scenes of Hollywood in terms of identity and the long history of propaganda that fuels the industry. Brooke Obie is THAT critic.
Mr. Caraballo writes the newsletter Coffee & Contemplation, which focuses on restoration of the soul though something we don’t have enough of in this world: deep self-reflection. He wrote a book called Meditations for Black Men: Ten Guided Meditations for the Body, Mind, and Spirit, which played a very large role in me surviving this tumultuous year.
In a world filled with liars, Danielle Moodie is one of the very few truth-tellers. One of the keenest minds I have ever encountered, Moodie's sociopolitical analysis cuts right through the bullshit and makes plain the dangers of our current times. A must read.
Mr. Joseph writes the newsletter In Retrospect, which is a righteous noise in the tradition of his many literary achievements. But beyond that, he also walks the walk via the fundraising and nonprofit labor he does for those most in need in marginalized communities. He teaches me a great deal about generosity, trust, my own humanity, and, of course, brotherly love.
Quiet as it’s kept, Kelly Sue DeConnick is the best comic book writer you ever did read. Seriously, her work is some next level shit and I hope me writing this convinces you to find out for yourself.
I think I'm most impressed by the synthesis of humor, advice, cosmology, sexuality, and politics. In these sinister and dreary times, Washington reminds us that resistance doesn't also have to be drudgery.
Homie writes the things I be thinking but be too scared to put to paper because of how vulnerable it might make me feel. In other words, he has the brass ones I wish I had.
One of the biggest blessings of life is that I get to be alive and writing at the same time Tommy Orange does. To be in a world where I get to read his genius as he writes it is too divine to be real.
Cree Myles knows that the secret to writing is reading. That's why she's out here a whole literary influencer while simultaneously writing her a$$ off in her Substack newsletter.
In a time disinformation and misinformation, where we can't trust most of the so-called news sources that are now own by billionaires, What I'm Reading by journalist Phil Lewis is one of the few places I can trust to get the information that matters.
