This will be the first-ever 5 Under 35 ceremony open to the general public. In 2006, the National Book Foundation established the 5 Under 35 prize to recognize young, debut fiction writers whose work promised to leave a lasting impression on the literary landscape. 5 Under 35 has identified some of the most celebrated young writers working today, like Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah, Brit Bennett, Akwaeke Emezi, Angela Flournoy, and Phil Klay.
The 2023 honorees include:
Mateo Askaripour, Black Buck
Mariner Books / HarperCollins Publishers
Selected by Robert Jones, Jr., 2021 National Book Award Finalist
Chelsea T. Hicks, A Calm & Normal Heart
Unnamed Press
Selected by Louise Erdrich, 2012 National Book Award Winner, 1999 and 2001 Finalist
Morgan Talty, Night of the Living Rez
Tin House Books
Selected by Karen Russell, 2009 5 Under 35 Honoree
Jenny Xie, Holding Pattern
Riverhead Books / Penguin Random House
Selected by Kirstin Valdez Quade, 2014 5 Under 35 Honoree
Ada Zhang, The Sorrows of Others
A Public Space
Selected by Jamil Jan Kochai, 2022 National Book Award Finalist
This is truly a cause for celebration—especially now, given the vast and insidious attacks on writers and literature in the United States and elsewhere.
Join us as we toast to art and artists in the heart of the livest of all of New York City’s five boroughs: Brooklyn! So:
Throw your hands in the air
And party like you just don’t care
If you’re in New York and you’re ready to groove
I better to see you there!
Blessings upon blessings,
Robert
