Gladys Books & Wine Opens in Bed-Stuy
Welcome to Witness, a reader-supported publication where I write in the traditions of Black resistance and survival in an age of artistic and political suppression. If you find something of value here, please consider becoming a paid subscriber. Thank you.
I had the pleasure of visiting for the first time Gladys Books & Wine, a new Black-lesbian-owned literary joint that has opened in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. The brainchild of Tiffany Dockery, it has such a warm vibe with excellent decor. It is like visiting your best homie’s house, with auntie and neo-soul energy thrown in for good measure.
It is a remarkable safe space and cultural reprieve in a neighborhood that is rapidly gentrifying and a country that has slid into a dictatorship. Inside, there are, of course, books—because feeding the mind is important and sadly becoming a niche activity. But there is also a cafe, a wine bar, and an outdoor gathering space. It is a perfect place to host parties and events.
The curation of the literature is phenomenal.
If you are ever in Brooklyn, be sure to stop by and show your support! And if you cannot visit in person, but sure to visit their store online: HERE.
