Your Boy Finna Be in Brazil for FLIP!
The Festa Literária Internacional de Paraty, October 9-13, 2024!
It’s confirmed!
You don’t know how HYPE I am to announce that I will be in Brazil for the 2024 Festa Literária Internacional de Paraty (FLIP), which takes place from October 9 to October 13. I will be in conversation with Evandro Cruz e Silva and Juliana Borges for a panel called:
“Prophecies of the Past”
Thursday, October 10, 2024
9 p.m. (GMT-3)
Main Auditorium
On James Baldwin's centenary, two authors bring together such different realities as they talk about the legacy of a violent past. In the USA, the construction of a separate national identity as resistance to the collective memories of an exiled people. In Brazil, the understanding that we still have a lot to deal with despite our apparent cordiality.
Tickets: “Prophecies of the Past”
For information on tickets, the authors scheduled to attend, and all the FLIP panels, please visit www.flip.org.br or follow FLIP on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/flip_se/.
I will also be signing copies of my novel, The Prophets, published in Brazil as Os Profetas.
According to HurfPost Brasil:
“FLIP is one of Brazil’s most prestigious literary festivals. Held annually in Paraty, this event draws writers, poets, and readers from around the world.
FLIP, or the Paraty International Literary Festival, started in 2003 and has since become a significant cultural event in Brazil. It transforms Paraty, Brasil, into a vibrant hub of literary discussions, readings, and workshops. The festival celebrates literature in all its forms, providing a platform for both established and emerging authors.
The main venues for FLIP include the Tent of Authors, the Tent of Readers, and the Casa de Cultura. These venues host various sessions, from author readings and debates to poetry slams and art exhibitions. The festival’s inclusive nature allows for a mix of free and ticketed events, ensuring that everyone can participate.
Highlights include:
Author Sessions: FLIP invites authors from around the globe to discuss their works and engage with the audience. These sessions offer deep insights into the minds of writers and their creative processes.
Workshops and Masterclasses: For aspiring writers, FLIP provides a range of workshops and masterclasses covering different aspects of writing and publishing.
Children’s FLIP (Flipinha): A dedicated section of the festival for young readers, offering storytelling sessions, interactive activities, and workshops aimed at fostering a love for reading among children.
FLIP Cinema: This segment includes screenings of literary adaptations and films that explore themes related to literature.
Art and Music: Complementing the literary focus, FLIP also features art exhibitions and musical performances, highlighting the cultural diversity of Paraty.”
After FLIP, I will head over to São Paulo for an Os Profetas book tour.
As I have shared previously, I’ve been to Brazil before; Rio de Janeiro to be precise. But I’ve never been to Paraty or São Paulo. I can’t wait to see all my Brazilian Fam and finally meet my editor Fernando Baldraia in person! And I’m excited to share and explore the commonalities and distinctions between Afro-Brazilian and African-American cultures and histories.

Side Note
A huge thank you to the extraordinary editor Donna Coonan, who asked me to write a new introduction for the Virago re-release of Gloria Naylor’s Mama Day, one of my favorite novels of all time. The novel drops in the U.K. on September 12, 2024.
Take good care!
Blessings upon blessings,
Robert
